What Does Feral Mean?

The definition, the slang and the clothing label.

Feral means wild or untamed. When describing animals, it often means living in the wild after domestication, or being descended from domesticated animals. In slang, it can describe someone letting go or behaving wildly. Whether that is affectionate or insulting depends on the context.

If you found the word on a hoodie or a jersey, you might be looking for FERAL clothing. We're an independent UK clothing label born on the dance floor, with cyber sigilism at the centre of what we make. The word, the feeling and the brand are connected. Here's how.

The short version

  • The word: wild or untamed, with a specific use for animals living beyond domestication.
  • The slang: uninhibited, intense or chaotic. Tone matters.
  • The feeling: for us, the moment you stop overthinking and get lost in the music.
  • The clothing: FERAL is our label, built around cyber sigilism and the people on the dance floor.

What does feral mean?

feral
Pronounced FEH-ruhl
Adjective
1. Wild or untamed. Often used for an animal that lives in the wild after domestication, or whose ancestors were domesticated.
Example: a population of feral cats.
2. Resembling a wild animal in behaviour or appearance.
Example: a feral snarl.

Those are the literal senses. Merriam-Webster's entry for feral covers both the wild-animal meaning and the return from domestication. Calling a night out feral is a figurative use of the same word.

Wild and feral overlap, but they aren't always interchangeable. In the animal sense, feral points to a connection with domestication. That can include animals born in the wild to feral parents. It doesn't mean the animal consciously chose to reject being tame.

Where does the word come from?

Merriam-Webster traces the adjective through Medieval Latin feralis to Latin fera, a wild animal, and ferus, meaning wild. It records an English use in 1604. The wild-animal sense has a much longer history than social media.

For this meaning of feral, that is the relevant word history. The idea of being untamed gives the word its force when we use it about a person, a crowd or a piece of clothing.

What does feral mean in slang?

In casual speech and captions, feral can mean uninhibited, intense, chaotic or out of control. Someone saying they went feral when their favourite track came on might mean they screamed, danced or completely lost their composure.

It can be playful, especially when people use it about themselves or close friends. It can also be critical. A description of aggressive behaviour and an excited message after a rave aren't saying the same thing.

Same word, different tone

“I went feral when that track dropped.” An excited way to describe a reaction to the music.

“The crowd was getting feral.” This could mean an energetic room or behaviour the speaker found worrying. The rest of the conversation tells you which.

So, is feral a compliment? It can be. It isn't automatically one, and you don't have to accept it as praise just because somebody meant it that way.

Feral on the dance floor

For us, feral is that moment when a set pulls your attention away from everything else. You recognise the next track. Your circle turns towards each other. Nobody needs to say anything.

That's the feeling we connect with the name: being fully there, with people who came for the same reason. You can let go and still look after the people around you. Making room for someone to dance is part of a good night.

Clothes become part of those memories. The jersey that always comes out for a festival. The hoodie you pull on for the journey back. A fan passed between friends when the room gets hot.

What is FERAL clothing?

FERAL is an independent clothing label rooted in rave and hard techno culture. Our first tee sold on 30 November 2023. It was HOT GIRLS LIKE TECHNO, and the response to that design was the start of the brand.

Since then, cyber sigilism has become central to our clothing. Branching graphics, sharp linework and embroidered details run through the collections, from hoodies and tees to denim, jerseys and matching pieces.

The community helps shape what comes next. Our brand story explains how one tee became FERAL and the principles behind it. For a closer look at the design language, read our guide to cyber sigilism.

What the name means to us

We use FERAL to express the freedom we find in the scene: wearing something because you love it, following your own taste and finding people who understand it. The clothes are how we put that feeling into something you can take with you.

The word belongs to everyday language too. Our clothing brand is one use of it. When you're looking for our collections, the official website is www.feralclo.com.
