The kick drum is at 150 and the room is already sweating. You've got one outfit to get through the queue, the floor and the walk home at six.

Hard techno asks more of your clothes than most nights out. The rooms are hot, dark and loud, and the sets are long. Whatever you wear has to move with you for hours, hide a lot of sweat and still look like you meant it when the flash goes off.

This guide covers the formula, six outfit ideas built from real FERAL photos, the shoes and accessories that earn their place, and an honest answer to where you should buy it all.

What the room asks of your outfit.

Before you pick a single piece, picture the night. A hard techno room runs hotter than most because everyone in it is moving at 150 beats per minute and up. The lights are mostly off; the strobe does the work. You'll stand, dance and queue for six or seven hours, and the walk to the night bus is the coldest part of it.

• Heat: fabric that breathes, and layers you can strip and carry.
• Dark: black hides the sweat; one detail catches the strobe.
• Hours: nothing that digs, rides up or needs adjusting every ten minutes.
• Loud: earplugs, and a pocket you can find them in without looking.
• The journey: a hoodie or coat you're happy to carry or cloakroom.

The hard techno formula.

Black top you can move in + loose black bottoms + worn-in trainers + one piece of artwork + a layer for outside.

That's it. Everything below is a variation on those five parts. The artwork is what makes it yours: red embroidery on black denim, a thermal print across the back of a tee, sigilism on a bikini top. Keep the rest plain and let one piece talk.

6 hard techno outfit ideas.

1. The black hoodie and red denim

Sigilism hoodie + embroidered black jeans + trainers.

The heavyweight look, and the one to start with if you're only buying two things. Size up if you want it to drop past your hips over jeans; keep it true to size for cargos. Check the hem with your arms up. If the tee lifts above your waistband every time you raise your hands, it's a size too small for a night of doing exactly that.

3. The jersey

Mesh or graphic jersey + cargos or shorts + secure underlayer + trainers.

4. The one-piece

Fit matters more than on any other look here because top and bottom move together. Sit down in it, squat, practise the toilet-break routine at home. Any thigh straps get the same test; if they slip, leave them.

5. The bikini top and cargos

Secure bikini top + relaxed cargos + trainers + hoodie in the bag.

For the rooms that hit thirty degrees by one in the morning. For winter, dress for inside and carry the rest. A zip hoodie over any of the looks above, a real coat if it's raining, and warm socks. Check whether the venue has a cloakroom and what it costs before you commit to a heavy layer you'll otherwise have to hold.

Shoes, bag, fan, earplugs.

Trainers you've already worn for hours. Not the new pair. Hard techno floors are concrete and you're on them until sunrise. Boots work if you know them; platforms change your balance, so try stairs first. Check the event's footwear rules.

Where to buy clothes for a hard techno rave.

The honest answer has two halves.

The base layer is easy. A plain black tee and a pair of black cargos from any high-street shop will do the job on the floor, and the big online retailers have more black trousers than you could ever try on. If this is your first hard techno night, that's a fine place to start.
